With Mercury Insurance, you cannot buy online (you get a quote ID), because they actually sell their auto insurance through independent agents. The auto insurance price quoted may have been different if we would have actually applied and had our credit and drivers records pulled. Mercury "assigns" a local auto insurance agent to you who will contact you.

On the Mercury auto insurance website, you'll notice their forms are short and easy to fill out. But there is a balance to be struck when generating auto insurance quotes. For instance, a carrier could take just your name and age and produce an auto insurance rate, but how specific would that be to you? And forget about getting competitors auto insurance rates or anything outside of Mercury from their website.

Mercury did not give us an online breakdown of the cost of each portion of coverage (unlike other online carriers), but we are awaiting this in the mail. Mercury is in only 13 states, AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, MI, NJ, NY, NV, OK, PA, TX, VA, but a good auto insurance carrier doesn't have to insure the world (as long as they treat their customers in those states well!).

The bottom line: Mercury auto insurance rates were about 30% more than what we are paying now, but totally not uncompetitive. For perspective, some larger national auto insurance carriers would easily charge us 100% more than we are paying now. We liked the mercury quote engine because you get your rate rather quickly.
